Topical day on radiation tolerant instrumentation: from transistor to integrated systems

Topical day:  March 18, 2008

Scope

For decades space applications have driven the demand for the development of radiation tolerant electronics, which first were application specific, but nowadays rely much more on COTS components. Also in existing nuclear facilities, like the fission reactors and the Large Hadron Collider in CERN, some electronics are exposed to radiation during their operation. However, the much higher radiation dose levels expected in future nuclear facilities such as the Accelerator Driven System MYRRHA and the prototype fusion reactor ITER call for the use of remote-handled equipment with radiation hardened electronics onboard which can withstand MGy dose levels.

This topical day intends to review the radiation behavior of the state-of-the-art semiconductor technology and the applications of electronic circuits in the different radiation environments.
