PATEROS: Partitioning and Transmutation European Roadmap for Sustainable nuclear energy
By doing research in the fields of transmutation and partitioning, the PATEROS project investigates the future possibilities with regard to sustainable nuclear energy.
At present, one third of the world population has no acces to electricity. Moreover, the World Counsil on Energy (WEC) has stated that fossil fuels and large hydro will not be able to meet the world’s long-term electricity demand in a sustainable manner. Therefore the future role of nuclear power needs to be investiged.
A closed fuel cycle is a prerequisite for making nuclear energy a sustainable one. This can be reached by deploying advanced partitioning and efficient transmutation systems to reduce the burden on the geological storage.
The objective of PATEROS is to deliver a European vision for the deployment of the partitioning and transmutation technology up to the scale level of pilot plants for all its components.
