PERFECT: Prediction of Irradiation Damage Effect in reactor Components

Project objectives

The main objectives of PERFECT are:

  • to build a strongly improved version of RPV-1 (RPV-2) and to complement it by a module aimed at simulating the irradiation-induced evolution of fracture toughness properties of RPV steels;
  • to build a new Virtual Reactor enable to simulate irradiation effects in stainless steels (INTERN-1) and to complement it by a module aimed at simulating the Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking (IASCC) behavior of these steels.

These tools will rely on the state of the art of physics and mechanics and will be developed in a “Software Integration Platform” under Quality Assurance. They will be usable by a large community : nuclear organizations, manufacturers, utilities, regulators, universities,…

The work required to build, validate and disseminate the proposed simulation tools has been structured in 6 sub-projects.

Sub-projects

0. Management
This sub-project contains all the tasks of the Coordinator and Head of the Executive Committee related to management of the project.

I. Integration
This sub-project will build RPV-2, INTERN-1, the “Toughness Module” and the “IASCC Module” from the elements provided by the other sub-projects. It will also couple each Virtual Reactor with its additional module.

Furthermore, the sub-project will have to validate the six integrated tools :

  • RPV-2
  • INTERN-1
  • “Toughness Module”
  • “IASCC Module”
  • RPV-2 + “Toughness Module”
  • INTERN-1 + “IASCC Module”

For this, it will collect available data from previous well documented experimental programs or provided by American, Japanese or Russian organizations with which formal collaboration will be set up. This database will complete that set up by the Users Group from data provided by its members or PERFECT participants. The validation will be carried out in collaboration with the other sub-project so as to improve the tools in an iterative process.
The sub-project will also support the validations carried out independently by the Users-Group as well as the European Collective Exercise of component analysis performed by the latter. It will try also to complete or enrich existing or previous experimental programs (EURATOM,…).

II. RPV & Internals : Physics Modeling
This sub-project will provide the codes, models and databases necessary to build RPV-2 and INTERN-1. These elements are very similar for both Virtual Rectors, this is why they will be developed in the same sub-project. The sub-project will have to carry out experimental programs to measure parameters required by codes and models.
The sub-project is also in charge of the validation of the individual codes and models it will propose. For this, it will:
- collect available data from previous well documented experimental programs. These data will be provided by the partners of PERFECT or found in databases set up by other national or international organizations;
- carry out complementary experimental programs.
The validation of the RPV-2 and INTERN-1 will be done in collaboration with the “Sub-Project Integration”.

III. Mechanics modeling
This sub-project will provide the codes, models and databases required to build the “Toughness Module”. It will have to carry out experimental programs aimed at measuring parameters required by codes and models.
The sub-project is also in charge of the validation of the individual codes and models it will propose. For this, it will:
- collect available data from previous well documented experimental programs. These data will be provided by the partners of PERFECT or found in databases set up by other national or international organizations;
- carry out complementary experimental programs.
The validation of the whole “Toughness Module” will be done in collaboration with the “Sub-Project Integration”.

IV. Internals : Mechanics & Corrosion modeling
This sub-project will provide the codes, models and databases to build the “IASCC Module”. It will have to carry out experimental programs aimed at measuring parameters required by codes and models.
The sub-project is also in charge of the validation of individual codes and models it will propose. For this, it will:
- collect available data from previous well documented experimental programs. These data will be provided by the partners of PERFECT or found in databases set up by other national or international organizations ;
- run complementary experimental programs.
The validation of the whole “IASCC Module” will be done in collaboration with the “Sub-Project Integration”.

V. Users Group
The Users Group will have for mission to fully connect the European Nuclear Community to PERFECT by disseminating the developed knowledge beyond the Consortium.
A User Advisory Committee and a Scientific Advisory Committee will be established:
- the User Advisory Committee will gather together selected European industry, regulatory bodies and education representatives ;
- the Scientific Advisory Committee will be a panel of leading international experts, established to assess the Project performance from the scientific point of view.
In a framework given by the Governing Board, the Users Group will have for main tasks:

  • Test and benchmark against experimental data the proposed simulation tools. This validation work will be carried out independently from that performed in the other sub-projects
  • Ensure the exploitation of results and dissemination of knowledge within the involved organizations and beyond
  • Organize a European Collective Exercise of component analysis in which material behavior assessment will be done by numerical simulation with the proposed tools

SCK•CEN is one of the major partners in this project, it contribute to all of each of the above mentionned sub-projects.
